ICF President Jose Perurena Lopez: we are ready to give Moscow the right to hold international kayak and canoe rowing event of the highest level

Today, on August, 1, at the Moscow rowing channel “Krylatskoe” the second competition day of the World Junior Sprint Canoe and Kayak Championships was over. The president of the International canoe federation Jose Perurena Lopez a day before the end of the competition declared to the special correspondent of the Agency of sport information “All Sport” that the World championships in Moscow have been a success.

“The Olympic rowing channel in Krylatskoe, according to may athletes and officials, is one of the best channels in the world”, Jos Perurena Lopez said. “May be it needs some renovation in the infrastructure but the channel itself and the organization are just perfect. That is why we are ready to give Moscow the right to hold competitions of the highest international level. We haven’t got any concrete suggestions yet though, and the World Champs are assigned till 2012. But in 2012 Moscow will first time in history host the World Cup stage. Yesterday we discussed it with the president of the Russian canoe and kayak federation Yevgeny Arkhipov, and there is really a chance that Moscow will bid for the World Champs-2013 or 2014. I can only hope that Moscow will host the events of such a scale. Russia is a huge country, rich with talents, you have perfect crowd on the stands, perfect channel – that is you have got everything needed for success!”

Maxim Opalev: junior results in the world rowing are progressing very fast

Today, on August, 1, in Moscow first finals of the World Junior Kayak and Canoe Championships took place. Olympic champion Maxim Opalev, who last year won at the Beijing Olympics, this time was a spectator – in a tie and on the stands. Maxim Opalve shared his impressions with the special correspondent of the Agency of sport information “All Sport”.

“For Russia to host a junior World Champs in kayak and canoe is very important”, Maxim Opalev said. “Recently junior results in the world rowing are progressing very fast, that’s why it’s specially pleasant that all these young athletes came to Moscow. I am perfectly aware that there are no weak athletes at the World champs, even in the juniors. I took part in the World junior champs twice – in 1995 and 1997. In 1995 I was two years younger than most of my competitors, but won two gold medals – in canoe-2 1000 m and canoe-4 500 m. In 1997, in Lahti I won two gold medals in canoe single in 500 and 1000 m. I am pleased to see that some strong canoeists appear now. We have in Russia a strong guy Alexei Korovashkov who won three medals at the recent European junior champs. I am keeping my fingers crossed for him”.

At the World junior kayak and canoe championships in Moscow the Olympic licenses for the Youth Games-2010 in Singapore will be on stake

At the World junior kayak and canoe championships, that will be held on 30 July – 2 August on the rowing channel in Krylatckoe, Moscow, the licenses for the first Youth Olympic Games-2010 in Singapore will be on stake. The head coach of the Russian youth team Yevgeny Kartashov analyzed for the Agency of sport information “All Sport” Russian chances to get the full quota.

“At the first ever Youth Olympic Games-2010 in Singapore kayak and canoe will be represented with only three events – men and women single kayak and men single canoe, - Yevgeny Kartashov said. – In other words, this means the maximum quota for a team can be three athletes 1993-1994 years of birth. The distance will also be non-standard for us, ultra short – 320 m. I think this had been done to make the events more attractive for the TV and spectators. Principally with the new leadership our sport declared the politics towards making it more attractive and easy to watch. The decision to cut the number of disciplines at the Youth Olympic Games is from the same row. Concerning Olympic licenses, they will be awarded basing on the results on 500 m from the World junior championships in Moscow. To get the license, in the men’s canoe one should be among the first five Europeans, in the men’s kayak – among the best eight, in the women’s kayak – among the best 11 European athletes”.

Yevgeny Kartashov also estimated the chances of the Russian team to win all three licenses. “In principle, we have quite good chances to win all three licenses. I am modest now just not to put the evil eye on it. For example, in canoe the reigning triple European junior champion Alexey Korovashkov will compete. In the men’s kayak Sergey Duz will compete. At the recent European junior championships he was fourth on 500 m and won the gold in the kayak-4. Traditionally the most complicated situation is in the women’s kayak, but even here I hope everything will be all right. Anzhelika Selenova was 6th at the European junior championships. In Moscow even such a result will be enough to qualify”.

The team of Japan was the first to arrive to the World junior kayak and canoe championships in Moscow

On 22 July, the team of Japan first out of all the participants arrived to Moscow to take part in the World junior kayak and canoe championships in 30 July – 2 August. The Japanese team has already had one training on the rowing channel. Today also arrived the teams of Italy and the USA. The general secretary of the All-Russian canoe and kayak federation, executive board member of the European association and International kayak and canoe federation Irina Sirayeva told about it to the Agency of sport information “All Sport”.

“There is no wonder that the teams of Italy, Japan and the USA were the first to arrive to Moscow, 0 Irina Sirayeva noted. – These specific countries were present at the test event before the World Champs that took place in Krylatckoe last year. They saw everything, understood how good it was here and decided to come well before the championships (smiling). Moreover, they booked the rooms in the hotel near the rowing channel in November, so now they have no transportation problems at all. The Japanese team includes 20 people, the teams of Italy and the USA are slightly bigger. In the next few days we are waiting for other delegations. But most of them will arrive next week. Still we are not afraid of this – everything is already thought over and works perfect. All together there will be slightly fewer countries on the World championships than we announced before – around 57 – 59. Some small countries still don’t know whether they will get financial support to travel to Moscow. Any case, the Moscow World junior championships will for sure be the most representative in history. Never before more than 50 countries arrived to the competition”.

27 athletes will represent Russia at the World Junior Canoe and Kayak championships in Moscow

At the World Junior Canoe and Kayak championships, which will be held on July, 31 - August, 2 in the rowing channel in Krylatskoe in Moscow, 27 athletes will represent Russia. The head coach of the Russian junior team Eugeny Kartashov told about it to the Agency of sport information “All Sport”.

“We started the preparation to the Junior Canoe and Kayak championships in Moscow in October last year, - Eugeny Kartashov noticed. - Selection to the team consisted of three stages, and for the moment everything is over. It was the Russian championships in November, the all-Russian competitions in April and the Russian championships in May. All these competitions were held in Krasnodar. According to the results we selected 27 athletes. 25 from these athletes will go to Poznan (Poland) on July, 13, for participating in the European Junior championships. We will come back from Poland on July, 20 and will start preparation for the Moscow World championships. For this we will work about a week in the rowing channel in Krylatskoe. In the junior teams they don’t usually talk about their plans for medals. I can say so: for the last years we didn’t drop out of the three leaders in the total medal table. In Moscow we, as minimum, want to achieve this goal”.

Eugeny Kartashov also told us about the staff of the Russian junior team. “The staff of the team in comparison with the previous year was updated for about 80 %. Usually we put three years for preparation of the junior team: the first year - involving, the second year - developing, the third year - productive. Only Ilya Pervukhin and Aleksey Korovashkov are on the third year of preparation, which are the two-time European champions among juniors of the last year in canoe-double. And at the selective Russian championships-2008 before the Olympic Games they lost only to famous Ulegin and Kostoglod, who won medals later in Beijing. So you should watch more careful after these boys”, - Eugeny Kartashov advised.

And the words: “I declare the World championships opened!” will announce, according to the traditions, the president of the International federation Mr Jos'e Perurena Lopez”.

The record number of countries - 62 - entered for the World Junior Canoe and Kayak championships in Moscow

About 900 athletes from 62 countries entered for the World Junior Canoe and Kayak championships, which will be held from July, 28 to August, 4 in the Moscow rowing channel “Krylatskoe”. The General Secretary of the Russian Kayak and Canoe Federation Irina Sirayeva told about it to the Agency of sport information “All Sport”.

“To tell you the truth, we didn’t expect that the World Junior Canoe and Kayak championships in Moscow will become so popular, - Irina Siraeva smiled. - For the moment about 900 athletes from 62 countries have sent preliminary entries. Such new for rowing regions as North Korea, South Africa, Thailand and Singapore are among them. These numbers are really very big, they are records for sure. Anyway, I can’t remember such numbers for 17 years of my work in the federation. What is the reason for such high interest? First, there haven’t been spent the international canoe and kayak competitions for a long time in Russia. Second, it means, that our kind of sports is really being developed all over the world. This indicator is the proof that canoe and kayak have great future”.

Irina Sirayeva also assured that the record number of participants won’t influence quality of the competitions. “The Management of the sport and entertainment actions of Moscow with Alexander Polinsky in the head is organizing the championships. These people have held already more than 15 World and European championships in different kinds of sport in Moscow. That’s why there were no difficulties for them in organizing our tournament”, - Irina Siraeva explained.

But the International Kayak and Canoe Federation (ICF) told us that, according to the rules of holding the competitions of the ICF, the opening ceremony is held mostly for the participants of the competitions, that’s why it’s necessary to hold it a day before the start. At the Russian Cup in Kayak and Canoe rowing in Krasnodar the new start system for the World championships 2009 in Krylatskoe was tested

At the Russian Cup in Kayak and Canoe rowing in Krasnodar on May, 29-31, the new start system was tested, that is planned to be used at the World Junior championships 2009 in Krylatskoe on July, 30 - August, 2. Dmitry Mironov, the counselor of the president of the Russian Kayak and Canoe Federation Eugeny Arkhipov told about it to the Agency of sport information “All Sport”.

“The start in Krasnodar became the final big competition in our country before the World championships, - Dmitry Mironov mentioned. - We decided to use such a good opportunity. We invited the commission of the International Kayak and Canoe Federation (ICF) with the technical delegate of the World championships Elisabeth Muller in the head to Krasnodar. And we tested the new start system, which will be used at the World championships in Krylatskoe. Besides, we tested several ideas in organizing the competition, which we submitted to the ICF commission. I think that it is a very useful experience for us before the final stage of the preparation for the World championships”.

The International federation gave positive mark to the readiness of Moscow to the World Canoe and Kayak Championships

On April, 22-23 the official delegation from the International Canoe and Kayak federation (ICF) with the technical delegate of the ICF Elisabeth Muller in the head visited Moscow and checked the readiness for the World Junior championships in the rowing channel in Krylatskoe on July, 28 - August, 4. Dmitry Mironov, the counselor of the president of the Russian Kayak and Canoe Federation Eugeny Arkhipov told about it to the Agency of sport information “All Sport”.

“It was the first official visit to Moscow of the ICF representatives and personally the technical delegate of the ICF Elisabeth Muller, - Dmitry Mironov said. - Till this moment it was more convenient to solve all the problems by e-mail. Mrs. Muller during her two days visit inspected the rowing channel in Krylatskoe, its infrastructure and logistics possibilities, and also accommodation conditions in the three hotels, which we are planning to offer to the guests of the World Championships. Besides, we invited her to be personally present at the meeting of the Management of the sport and entertainment actions of Moscow, at which we discussed the questions of preparations to our tournament. On the results of her visit Elisabeth Muller noticed, that she had seen the real interest of the city officials in successful holding of the World championships, and for the moment she was sure that all the problems left would be solved. Thus, it is possible to call the ICF’s estimation of actual readiness of Moscow unequivocally positive”.

The legendary Maxim Opalev became the prototype for the mascot of the Moscow World Junior Canoe and Kayak championships 2009

The official logotype of the World Junior Canoe and Kayak championships, which will be held on July, 28 - August, 4 2009 in Moscow in the rowing channel in Krylatskoe, has been confirmed. The president of the Russian Kayak and Canoe Federation Eugeny Arhipov told about it to the Agency sport information “All Sport”.

“At the Junior World championships we are planning to welcome about 1000 guests from more than 50 countries, - Eugeny Arhipov noticed. - Such big international competitions in Canoe and Kayak haven’t been held in this channel since the Olympic Games 1980. Therefore, we approach the organization of the tournament with maximum gravity. As I have already announced, in the nearest future the Major of Moscow Yury Luzshkov is going to sign the order “About the preparation and holding of the World Junior Canoe and Kayak championships in Moscow 2009”, and he will be the head of the Organizing Committee. We already have the first news. The official logotype of World has been confirmed, where the mascot of the tournament is also represented - the bear-canoeist. Frankly speaking, when we first tried to imagine how the mascot should look like, what personal and professional qualities it should have, at once we thought about our famous canoeist, Olympic champion Maxim Opalev. Maxim by right has a great popularity among the young athletes; he is a real example for the growing generation. That’s why, the designers, working at the logotype, used also the image of Opalev. Don’t be surprised, that our bear-canoeist “wears” red bandana”.
